The educational landscape globally is changing in line with the labor market. Employers are no longer demanding certifications only. Your connections with people can take you far in your respective field. Multinational companies now require extra qualifications outside the classroom. Hence, to have an edge in the labor market, you need to readjust and refocus your academic life.

Here are 10 tips on how to be an exceptional student and have an edge in the labor market this year:

1.    Join academic clubs: When you join an academic club, your skills in that academic field are sharpened. More so, you meet experts in that field and network with credible people.

2.    Join a volunteering organization: Have you noticed that most scholarship schemes, especially international ones, tend to ask about how you have contributed to the well-being of your community? Luckily, most tertiary institutions are flooded with NGOs looking for people to help society.

3.    Win a competition: One of the strongest testaments that you are good in a field is if you win a competition in that field. So, aspire to win a competition in your respective field of study.

4.    Begin a side hustle: Arguably, there is a 50% chance you might end up not practicing the degree you are aiming for. In order not to be left stranded, begin a side hustle but do so with discipline.

5.    Read more: Whether you like it or not, school is not a scam. Employers still value a good degree. So, aspire to study harder this year and boost your grades.

6.    Cut off unimportant friends: Time is a necessity for reading. As a student, cut off any friend who wastes your time on trivialities.

7.    Intern: Have you ever wondered why an employer would ask a prospective employee who just graduated from the university about their professional experience? The experience they are referring to is an internship. This year, set out to intern in at least two firms, especially during the holidays.

8.    Work smart, not hard: The world is ruled by results, not efforts. We are in a digital age, so learn to use digital tools to make your academic work easier.

9.    Eat and sleep healthy: When you are healthy, you can aspire to achieve anything. No matter the level of work you have, always get quality sleep and consume fruits and vegetables.

10. In conclusion, be disciplined. You need to be disciplined to achieve all that is set out above. It is one thing to have a goal; it is another to achieve them.
