Helen Keller was an American writer, activist and lecturer. Despite losing her sight and hearing at nineteen months of age, she was able to learn how to communicate through the dedication of her teacher, Anne Sullivan. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree (the first deafblind person to do so), became a world-famous speaker and author, and strived to better the lives of many disadvantaged groups, especially the disabled. June 27, her birthday, is commemorated as Helen Keller Day in the US state of Pennsylvania.
